About Ready Defense

I have been shooting since I was six or seven years old.  I remember clearly the first handgun I ever shot…
my grandfather’s artillery Luger. The detachable stock had been damaged and not repaired, so we shot it as a pistol off an old picnic table.  It was beautiful and sexy looking and heavy for a young boy. Did I mention loud?  My grandfather was old school and never even considered eye/ear protection (sorry, Grandma).  It was exciting and uncomfortable and I would not have changed a thing. I shot as often as I could all the way through my young adulthood.

Fast forward forty or so years to teaching my wife and our children to enjoy shooting and be safe around firearms. I discovered that I really enjoyed seeing novice shooters become familiar with firearm safety and recreational shooting. My wife and I joined a shooting club in San Diego County and ran the youth trap program for several years. We both became certified Range Safety Officers and volunteered our time at the club. We earned certification as NRA Basic Pistol, Rifle, and Shotgun instructors and began officially teaching. While mentoring at NRA Women On Target events Cheryl and I discovered that we truly enjoyed teaching ladies to enjoy safe shooting. After we moved to Mohave County in 2019 we began offering a free Ladies Basics of Pistol Safety clinic at 7 Mile Hill range. We still offer that free clinic and an additional Men’s Clinic to this day.

As a result of our clinics, personal friendships, and Cheryl’s real estate business, we realized there was a demand in the Kingman area for more advanced shooting training and Arizona CCW instruction.  I started Ready Defense, LLC in April 2026 to provide USCCA certified CCW classes and firearm proficiency training in addition to our free clinics. I look forward to supporting you in attaining your firearms related goals.
